The Crown City

History of Coronado Marketing

Coronado, California, known affectionately as the "Crown City," was established with visions of grandeur and luxury. The founding of Coronado was marked by strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit. After acquiring the undeveloped peninsula for $110,000, Elisha Spurr Babcock, Jr., Hampton L. Story, and their partners set about turning their vision of a resort community into reality. The Coronado Beach Company, established by the group, embarked on a massive development project to attract residents and tourists to this picturesque location.

In 1887, the founders launched an ambitious plan to create the ultimate resort destination. They constructed the Coronado Railroad to connect the peninsula directly to San Diego, enhancing accessibility and boosting the area's appeal. This development was crucial, as it facilitated the easy transportation of materials and visitors, which was essential for the city’s growth.

After the connection to San Diego was established the construction of the Hotel del Coronado began in 1888. Designed as a luxury resort, the hotel was a feat of architectural brilliance and one of the largest resorts in the world at the time.

Its iconic Victorian architecture and sophisticated allure attracted a wealthy clientele, including celebrities, presidents, and royalty from around the globe. The hotel not only boosted Coronado's early economy but also established its long-standing reputation as a premier vacation destination.

John D. Spreckels, furthered the development of Coronado after the initial establishment. He invested heavily in the city, and developed the Coronado Ferry Company and San Diego Electric Railway. Spreckels’ influence greatly expanded the city’s accessibility and connectivity to San Diego, fostering growth in both tourism and local residency. Located in the heart of Coronado John D. Spreckels is memorialized at Spreckels Park which continues to be a vibrant community gathering place hosting many public events and celebrations.

The early 20th century saw Coronado evolve with the establishment of significant military installations, including the North Island Naval Air Station in 1917. This development solidified the city’s strategic importance and brought a diverse population to the area, further enriching its cultural tapestry.
