Del Mar Marketing

Where the Turf Meets the Surf

History of Del Mar Marketing

Spanish for "of the sea" the name Del Mar was coined Theodore M. Loop, a railroad official, and his wife Ella, who named the place inspired by a poem titled "The Fight of Paso del Mar" by Bayard Taylor. The modern city of Del Mar began with its purchase by Colonel Jacob Taylor in 1885 for $1,000. Taylor envisioned Del Mar as a luxurious resort town, leading to the construction of the Del Mar Hotel in 1886, which marked the beginning of Del Mar as a sought-after beach resort.

Bing Crosby and other Hollywood figures formed a partnership and established of the Del Mar Racetrack in 1937. The racetrack brought glamour and an influx of visitors, solidifying Del Mar’s status as a premier summer destination. The Del Mar Racetrack quickly became a cultural landmark, drawing celebrities and socialites, adding to the rich community of Del Mar.

In 1936 Del Mar became the official location for the San Diego County Fair, which was previously held in various locations around the county. This annual event, still held in Del Mar, contributes significantly to the local economy and cultural life. During WWII the SD Fair was suspended and the fairgrounds were actually utilized for military purposes.

With the excitement of Del Mar attracting celebrities like Lucy and Desi Arnaz and Jimmy Durante they needed a place to stay. Often these notable people would stay at the L’Auberge Del Mar, located on the site of the original Stratford Inn. Built in 1910, the Stratford Inn contributed to Del Mar's reputation as a luxurious and exclusive coastal resort.
