History of Imperial Beach Marketing

Imperial Beach's modern history began in 1887 when R.R. Morrison, a developer, filed a subdivision map that laid out present-day Imperial Beach. The area quickly became popular for its beautiful beaches and excellent fishing, attracting visitors and settlers who were captivated by its natural beauty.

In 1909, the completion of the San Diego and Arizona Railway enhanced access to Imperial Beach, boosting its appeal as a seaside resort. Despite this, the city maintained much of its small-town charm and remained a relatively quiet beach community for several decades.

Imperial Beach was officially incorporated as a city in 1956. Following incorporation, Imperial Beach began to cultivate its identity as an affordable and family-friendly beach town, distinguished by its casual vibe and beautiful natural surroundings.

Known for its beautiful, surfable waves, the city has hosted numerous surf competitions, including the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition, which was a major event until 2011. This event not only drew visitors from all over but also showcased the artistic spirit of the community. It was replaced by the Sun & Sea Festival, which continues to celebrate the city's beach culture with sandcastle building, parades, and family activities.

The city of Imperial Beach honors big wave pioneers like Dempsey Holder, an apex San Diego surfer, who was also a top qualified lifeguard. During the 1920s and 1930s surf enthusiasts from around the world were drawn to the perfect surf conditions provided by the TJ Slough's wave break, including Duke Kahanamoku who kept a Southern California residency.

Surfhenge downtown IB in front of the Imperial Beach Pier, commissioned by the Port of San Diego in 1997 was completed by the local artist Malcolm Jones. Nearby on Palm Avenue, the outdoor surfboard museum chronicles the history of surfboard design and surfing culture in California on surfboard benches, providing a unique educational experience.

From 2014 to 2022 Mayor Serge Dedina helped drive a wave of positive change focusing on environmental issues, particularly cross-border pollution solutions. Paloma Aguirre, the first Latina and first woman Mayor of Imperial Beach, continues to addressing these challenges helping make Imperial Beach one of the best places to live and visit in San Diego county.
