Best Climate on Earth

History of Lemon Grove Marketing

The motto "Best Climate on Earth" is derived from the first Miss Lemon Grove, Amorita Treganza, crowned in 1928. Architect and resident of Lemon Grove Alberto O Treganza built the civic statue to carry his 16 year old daughter in the 1928 Forth of July Fiesta de San Diego parade.

The Lemon float is about ten feet long and six feet wide, it was plastered as a permanent monument in 1930. Often referred to as the world's biggest lemon it can be found by the Orange Line Trolley tracks near the downtown bus stop. The big lemon is a focal point for community pride and tourism.

Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, early pioneers were drawn to this verdant landscape and the area grew into a fledgling community. Robert Allison from Illinois became a prominent landowner and was instrumental in developing Lemon Grove’s agricultural community. Allison was one of the first to cultivate lemon trees in the area, his success encouraged other farmers to plant lemon and orange groves. In 1894, the Lemon Grove Post Office was established.

The "Lemon Grove Incident" of 1931, marked a pivotal moment in the city’s history. This case of Roberto Alvarez versus the local school board was the first successful school desegregation court case in the United States. The twelve year-old student was not forced into a separate school, influencing educational policy nationwide and reinforced Lemon Grove as a community grounded in principles of justice with a commitment to civil rights and equality.

Local leaders like Joseph Ballantyne, a local businessman and civic leader, contributed to the establishment of the Lemon Grove Fire Department and was involved in the creation of local civic organizations.

Many early brands from Lemon Grove's history still remain in business today. A few household names for locals in Lemon Grove include Berry's Athletic Supply, Hunter's Nursery and RCP Block & Brick. Berry's Athletic Supply started in 1952 when Bernice and Art Berry saw more success selling athletic equipment and toys then their original business as a small Firestone tire dealership downtown on Imperial Avenue.
