History of National City Marketing

National City is strategically positioned at the heart of San Diego County. Situated approximately five miles south of downtown San Diego and eleven miles north of the Mexican border, it spans a total area of 9.2 square miles.

National City, one of the oldest cities in San Diego County, boasts a rich history that has significantly shaped its development and character. Founded in the 1860s by the industrious Kimball brothers (Frank, Warren, and Levi) National City was envisioned as a major transportation hub, due to its strategic location along the San Diego Bay.

The Kimball brothers were pioneers in realizing the potential of the area. They were instrumental in bringing the first railroad to the region, connecting National City directly to the rest of the country. This critical development, completed in the late 19th century, catapulted the city into economic prominence, facilitating trade and attracting settlers. In recognition of their contributions, the brothers established various public amenities, including schools, parks, and libraries, laying the groundwork for a thriving community.

Incorporated in 1887, National City quickly became a bustling center due to its advantageous port facilities and fertile land, which supported a robust agricultural sector. The early economy was also supported by shipbuilding and manufacturing industries, drawing a diverse workforce to the area.

In the early 1950s when several car dealerships started clustering along National City Boulevard. This trend continued, and the area quickly grew into a major automotive retail hub. Officially branded as the "Mile of Cars" in the 1960s, it has since expanded to include over 20 dealerships representing more than 21 major automobile brands.
