PB, the Place to Be

History of Pacific Beach Marketing

Pacific Beach was first developed in the year 1887 when railroad magnate D.C. Reed, O.S. Hubbell, and A.G. Gassen acquired and subdivided the land. The goal of Pacific Beach was to creating a luxury resort community like Coronado, the Pacific Beach Company was established and they began selling lots.

The Los Angeles-San Diego (La Jolla) rail line, inaugurated in 1909, connected Pacific Beach with downtown San Diego, making it more accessible and spurring residential development. The construction of the Crystal Pier in 1927, initially intended as a docking facility for gambling ships, further boosted Pacific Beach’s appeal, transforming it into a popular tourist destination. The addition of cottages on the pier in the 1930s further enhanced its appeal as a vacation destination, encapsulating the area's seaside allure.

Pacific Beach has cultivated a distinctive cultural identity characterized by its laid-back beach lifestyle, vibrant nightlife, and strong community spirit. Over the decades, this San Diego neighborhood has evolved from a quiet seaside resort to a bustling hub of activity beloved by surfers, students, and families alike.

With its consistent waves and welcoming shores, it has become a haven for surfers from around the world. Surf shops, beach bars, and the annual surf competitions not only reinforce this identity but also attract tourists seeking the quintessential California surf experience.
