The local knowledge behind the work
History of Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach was first developed in the year 1887 when railroad magnate D.C. Reed, O.S. Hubbell, and A.G. Gassen acquired and subdivided the land. The goal of Pacific Beach was to create a luxury resort community like Coronado. The Pacific Beach Company was established, and they began selling lots.
The Los Angeles-San Diego (La Jolla) rail line, inaugurated in 1909, connected Pacific Beach with downtown San Diego, making it more accessible and spurring residential development. The construction of the Crystal Pier in 1927, initially intended as a docking facility for gambling ships, further boosted Pacific Beach’s appeal, transforming it into a popular tourist destination. Cottages were added to the pier in the 1930s, giving visitors a place to stay right over the water and adding to the area’s appeal as a vacation spot.
Pacific Beach has its own clear identity: a laid-back beach lifestyle, a busy nightlife, and a tight-knit community. Over the decades it grew from a quiet seaside resort into a lively neighborhood popular with surfers, students, and families.
The consistent waves and easy beach access draw surfers from all over. Surf shops, beach bars, and the yearly surf competitions keep that reputation going and pull in visitors after the classic California surf experience.
